About FVDES

Gary Enns

Senior Math Teacher

I am the Senior Math teacher at FVDES. I previously was the Math Department Head at Chilliwack Secondary in Chilliwack for 13 years and before that I was the Math Department Head at Brookswood Secondary in Langley. I am a graduate in Mathematics and Computers from UBC and have been enjoying my work as a teacher ever since.

I was one of the first teachers in the province to take a computer into the classroom. Schools couldn't afford to buy them in the beginning so I would call up a computer company and ask if we could evaluate one of their machines. When the sales person delivered it I would talk them into leaving it for a while for a long term evaluation. The staff and students would use the machine and we wouldn't return it until the sales person asked for it, sometimes up to 3 weeks later. Then I would simply call another company for another "evaluation". We had one machine or another in the school for months this way.

Brookswood Secondary finally was able to afford to buy 3 Apple IIs at the end of the year. These machines were pumped up to 48k of memory at $100 per 16k chip! That's right, the entire operating system and user memory fit into 48k! We thought we had lots of memory! By contrast at Chilliwack Secondary we had over 200 computers which were all online at the same time with our own Internet Service Provider, email and web server servicing our students and parents.

I have been teaching the following courses over the last 28 years:

  • Math 8,9,10,11,12
  • Advanced Placement Calculus
  • Information Technology 11
  • Information Technology 12
  • Electronics 10

I am looking forward to helping Distance Education students with their work. Principles of Math 8, 9, and 10 is online as of September 2004.
