About FVDES

George Porro

Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, a long time ago - long before GST - but well after the 2nd World War! Nonetheless, here is a little blurb about ME!

After completing an Adult Grad program in Vancouver, B.C., I went into an apprenticeship program in the Machinist/Millwright trade. I worked in the field for about 10 years and decided to enroll in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia where I completed my Bachelor of Education (Bed) degree. Shortly thereafter, I completed my Master of Education degree (M.Ed.). at the University of Portland (Oregon, USA).

I have been an educator for 15 years now and have worked in many capacities and in a variety of settings including the following; Middle School Team Leader, Adult education (alternate education), School District Curriculum Coordinator and now at Distance education. I have taught a variety of courses including academic, nonacademic elective, and shop courses. And I have had the opportunity to work with teachers as a mentor and support person. All of my experiences have been rewarding and challenging.

Now at distance education, the challenge is to create courses that are meaningful as well as pedagogically sound. I certainly feel privileged to be working at FVDES with such a dynamic group of dedicated and talented staff. And I look forward to contributing to the positive and rapid growth of our school.

Distance education is an important and viable option for many students. And it is important for me to develop and provide an educational program that is robust, and that meets the diversified interests and needs of all students. This is my commitment to you.
