About FVDES

Jan Gladish

Position: Planning 10, Transition Planning 12 Teacher

My name is Jan Gladish and I teach the online versions of Planning 10 and Transition Planning 12 at Fraser Valley Distance Education School.

I was raised on a small reserve called Bella Bella on the central coast of BC. After high school, I graduated from UBC with a B Ed in 1983.  Along with raising a family, my husband and I taught in a several places in BC and Alta until we eventually made our way back to the west, but only after taking time away from school to tour Europe with our three children in a factory new Westfalia.  We settled in Chilliwack in 1994 when I took a job at Chilliwack Secondary School and I remained there until June 2006.  During my tenure at CSS, I completed my MEd from the Univ of Lethbridge and had the good fortune to draw upon that training by working in a seconded position as a Faculty Associate at SFU in 2003-04. While at CSS, I provided support to First Nations students and I taught English, Keyboarding, AVID, Planning, BC First Nations Studies, and Learning Concepts. Over the past 20 years, I have taught mostly English, and Social Studies.

While at CSS, I was actively engaged with the implementation and teaching of the AVID program and I sponsored two very active student clubs, the African Relief Club and the Diversity Club (GSA) As well, as part of my role as AVID/Planning teacher, I took many students on field trips to explore a range of post-secondary opportunities. My most ambitious trip involved taking a group of 40 kids to universities in Alta followed by a road trip to the great north to tour smaller institutions such as UNBC, TRU, and UBC OK. We also did several day trips to local universities such as UVic, UCFV, Douglas College, and Capilano College.

My husband Vic and I have three grown children.  Trish is married and works as a TA while working part time on her degree. Carl, also married, is working on a PhD at New York University in Manhattan in New York City. Jay is finishing his final year at UNBC where he plays for the UNBC Men's Basketball team.

Teaching online is an exciting challenge for me and I am on a steep learning curve as I seek to provide a meaningful and interactive online learning environment for students.  Please feel free to contact me at  jgladish@fvdes.com or 1 800 663-3381 local 2462
