About FVDES

Janet Delisle

I was born in London, England, lived in Germany until I was five and then immigrated to Canada. I grew up in Red Deer, Alberta. I attended Red Deer College. Between College and University I took a little break to decide what I wanted to do with my life, I backpacked and hitchhiked through Europe and ended up in North Africa, Israel, Egypt, and Turkey. My experiences there, helped me to realize my goal of being a teacher. I witnessed much poverty, and couldn't help but think what an impact education would make on many of the children's lives there. I returned to Canada and graduated from U of A in hope of someday returning and making a difference. My first teaching job was on the Alberta/Saskatchewan border in a place called New Brigden. I lived in a teacherage there. I met my husband that year and returned to Edmonton, to teach at Princeton and Mount Royal Elementary for 7 years as a music specialist and grade 1-3 home room teacher. It was during this time that my two children were born and we ended up moving to Grand Prairie, I taught at St. Mary's in Sexsmith for one year, after which we decided it was too cold, and we cast our sights to British Columbia. Through a series of events I was led to Distance Education.

Never in my teaching career have I been in a more dynamic teaching situation. The learning curve has been very high for me. I have had the opportunity to participate in many educational experiences since arriving at FVDES, including Simon Fraser Institute's Teaching and learning in a technological environment and the Apple Teacher Institute. I believe the possibilities of on-line learning are mind boggling, and will change the face of the traditional school forever. I am delighted to be at the forefront of offering children of all ages the freedom to attend school any where at anytime. I have students from Egypt, Singapore and Mexico as well as local students from all over the lower mainland! I believe that education can change the world, that building community and working together, even when great distances separates us, is the key to peace.

I am proud to be a Canadian Citizen helping to foster the values that we hold so dear... democracy, individual freedom, freedom of speech, freedom to choose our own religion, and a right to share information.
