Why Is A Policy On Academic Integrity Needed? By the very nature of  Distance Education, online students must have Internet connectivity and that can be a double edged sword.  On the plus side, students have ready access to course websites, discussion groups, online tutorials, teachers and a cornucopia of information and resources.  Nevertheless, the temptation to “borrow”  information (cutting and pasting data or downloading an assignment created by another student) without proper acknowledgement can be very great simply because it's so easy to do in a digital environment. As well, the culture of the ‘Net is based in large part on the philosophy of "sharing" whether that sharing occurs legally or not. Because this perception is so pervasive, it’s often difficult for students to distinguish what is possible and permissible and what is not.

In addition, the ‘Net also fosters a culture of anonymity.  “On the Internet, no one knows you’re a dog.”, is a popular quote which emphasizes this point.  As a result, students may be tempted to behave online in ways they would never dream of in a face to face situation simply because no one will know or find out - or so they believe.

Therefore, students need to realize that when they work online there are certain standards of behaviour and conduct which are expected by the staff of the Fraser Valley Distance Education School.  Teachers works very hard to create an environment where academic excellence is promoted and ethical behavior is encouraged. When a student falsefies, copies or fabricate research; uses words, thoughts or ideas that are not his own; copies homework or assignments from another student or cheats on an examination, this not only corrupts the educational process and impedes a student’s academic progress, it also compromises the trust between teacher and student that is fundamental to the learning process. To ensure that students understand the serious nature of these actions and possible consequences which may result, the following Academic Integrity policy has been created.
