Program 1: Blended Learning @ FVDES

Welcome to Blended Learning at FVDES! Do you wish to combine the best of both worlds – blending distributed learning at home with onsite classes? Does your child like hands-on learning? Do you live within easy driving distance of our facility? Do you have a parent or other caring adult that can support learning at home? In the 2018-2019 school year, FVDES blended learning programs are expanding and available from kindergarten to grade 9. Our grades K - 2 program is called “Initiate” and our grades 3-5 program is called “Interact”.

INITIATE and INTERACT are blended learning programs that combine face-to-face activities and field trips with distributed learning at home. Students will attend classes/activities/outings with their teacher(s) on Wednesday mornings from 9 – 11 am, twice per month. (Times may vary slightly depending on the activity.) For the remaining days, students will continue their program at home under the guidance of their Home Facilitator.

AT SCHOOL:

  • Onsite activities – Will include options from robotics, programming, STEM challenges, literacy and numeracy, art, science, and social studies.
  • Community based learning – library, field trips, activity days

AT HOME:

  • Students work through curriculum with a home facilitator. Learning options include:
    • K-4 Theme-based units that include materials and resources are available to engage and support your child’s educational development.
    • Grade 5 – Structured courses (with some built-in choices) are available.
    • K-5 - With the teacher and home facilitator, a more flexible / customized program can be outlined on a Student Learning Plan.
    • K-5 - *If your child is involved in community programming, ask if it can be part of the learning plan.

PLEASE NOTE: Eligible families must have a dedicated adult at home to act as home facilitator.

Program 2: Gr. K-5 Distributed Learning (DL) at Home

The distributed learning program is for families who have a dedicated home facilitator* and students who are willing to work with their home facilitator on their program at home. The onsite teachers and DL students/facilitators maintain regular communication and evidence of learning is submitted consistently as outlined on the Student Learning Plan.

  • Learning options include:
    • K-4 Theme-based units that include materials and resources are available to engage and support your child’s educational development.
    • Grade 5 – Structured courses (with some built-in choices) that include materials and resources are available.

Programs 1 and 2: Parents/Guardians and Home Facilitation

Whether you choose Blended Learning @ FVDES or Distributed Learning, it is a requirement that parents/guardians provide a documented commitment for their child’s Student Learning Plan (SLP). As the Home Facilitator, parents/guardians provide guidance, support, and direction for their child in the learning selected on the Student Learning Plan. In order for students to be successful, parents/guardians must play an active role and maintain regular communication with the teacher(s).

The responsibilities also include:

  • Work with the teacher to create a Student Learning Plan that selects either structured FVDES courses or more flexible options to meet BC curricular requirements.
  • Become familiar with the curriculum, content, and resources of the program/course(s) or learning choices outlined on the Student Learning Plan.
  • Provide a suitable permanent workspace for their child.
  • Establish a daily/weekly schedule that includes enough time to develop skills and explore content deeply.
  • Ensure their child completes “school work” on a regular basis.
  • Help put together evidence of learning / submissions of assignments as outlined on the Student Learning Plan with their child before submitting to FVDES.
  • Review returned work and feedback from the teacher(s) with their child.
  • Monitor the online grade-book with their child.

We hope you will join our community of learners!

PLEASE NOTE: FVDES is authorized by the British Columbia Ministry of Education and uses BC certified teachers.
