[Scott # B216]
This stamp celebrates the 10th anniversary of Hitler's formal accession to power. Though Hitler's Nazi Party never did win a majority in a democratic election, they did win the plurality of votes in the last two elections of Weimar Germany. Other right-wing party leaders foolishly thought they could harness and control this popularity, and convinced President Hindenburg to give Hitler the Chancellorship on January 30, 1933. Hitler quickly moved to dismantle any semblance of democracy, but he was always able to claim democratic legitimacy whenever it was useful.
