The "Mutter und Kind" (Mother and Child) movement created by the Nazis glorified a traditional role for women as happy homemakers. According to Goebbels, it was their patriotic duty (and biological imperative) to produce the next generation of culturally superior Aryans. Even though many middle class women were genuinely attracted to this promise, the reality was quite different. As more and more women were needed for the war effort, this idyllic home life was nothing more than a propaganda tool.

The images above illustrate the narrow range of options for women in Nazi Germany. Your first priority was to have a family, but you could work in "feminine" occupations like nursing and postal delivery... before you married. Again, however, the reality was quite different. Older women, particularly from the working class, were quietly shunned if they didn't work outside the home, and most women felt pressured to work during the war.

Before they could raise a large Aryan family,
German girls had to be healthy! Fitness was a major part of Nazi culture.
