Program Information

All courses that a Grade 8/9 student is taking through FVDES must be listed on the Grade 8 & 9 Student Learning Plan.



The B.C. Ministry of Education has redesigned the curriculum model for students Kindergarten to Grade 9, and the new curriculum has been implemented in the 2016/17 school year. All FVDES Grade 8 and 9 programs are ten months in length, and start in September 2017 and end in June 2018.

The areas of study for the new curriculum in Grades 8 and 9 are as follows:

  • English Language Arts
  • Social Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Physical and Health Education
  • Core French
  • Arts Education
  • Applied Design, Skills and Technologies
  • Career Education 

Parents/Guardians and Home Facilitation

In Distributed Learning, it is a requirement that parents/guardians provide a documented commitment for their child’s Student Learning Plan (SLP). As the Home Facilitator, parents/guardians provide guidance, support and direction for their child in the FVDES program and courses. In order for students to be successful, parents/guardians must play an active role and maintain regular communication with the teacher(s) and counselor (s). The responsibilities also include:

  • Become familiar with the FVDES curriculum, content, and resources of the program/course(s).
  • Provide a suitable permanent work space for their child.
  • Establish a daily/weekly schedule that includes enough time to cover the course work.
  • Ensures their child works on a regular basis.
  • Reviews all work and assignments, with their child before submitting to FVDES.
  • Helps their child make the arrangements for taking tests, and ensures that they are prepared.
  • Reviews returned work and feedback from the teachers, with their child.
  • Monitors the online grade-book with their child.

Teacher Roles/Responsibilities and Agreement: (Additional Information and Teacher Signature (s) are on the Course Learning Plan(s)

  • Provide instruction, evaluation and assessment in the subjects/grades as prescribed by the B.C. Ministry of Education.
  • Provide quality feedback in a timely manner.
  • Maintain regular communication with students/parents/guardians.
  • Provide support and guidance to the Home Facilitator.

Student Roles/Responsibilities and Agreement:

  • I agree to begin this program immediately, and understand that I must work at a pace in consultation with my FVDES Counselor & Teachers,
  • I commit to doing my best to meet the expectations and timelines as outlined in the individual Course Learning Plans.
  • I will communicate regularly with my teacher(s) by phone, e-mail or at FVDES.
  • I agree to attend online vClass sessions at the request of my teacher(s).
  • I will comply with the FVDES Online Acceptable Use Policy posted on the website.
  • I agree to abide by the FVDES Academic Integrity Policy and the FVDES Code of Conduct.
  • I am aware that I must complete all courses by the end of the term in June of the current school year.
  • * I agree to participate and fulfill the Ministry requirements of Daily Physical Activity.

Parent/Guardian Roles/Responsibilities and Agreement:

  • As the parent/guardian and home facilitator, I agree to support the educational program outlined by FVDES teachers in the individual Student Learning Plan and Course Learning Plans.
  • I agree to oversee that my child's assignments, projects, quizzes and tests are completed as outlined in the Course Learning Plan.
  • I agree to regularly monitor my child's online grades for all subjects.
  • I agree to maintain communication with the teacher(s) as needed, and participate in Parent-Teacher interviews.
